Some bourbon flavor develops more toward the end, somewhat conflicting with the peanut and the sweet, leaving one with a somewhat off taste to linger on the tongue. There is some sweet caramel and a bit of wood, as well as a touch of vanilla, all of which grow a bit stronger as the taste advances. Taste – The taste begins with a roasted malt and light chocolate taste mixed with just a touch of peanut and coffee. Overall, smells akin to a chocolate peanut butter cup. Along with these smells comes notes of milk chocolate and some light woody smells with a little bit of molasses and brown sugar rounding it all out. Smell – The aroma is potent of a sweet peanut butter and roasted malt aroma mixed with a big showing of confectioners’ sugar and vanilla. The head fades rather fast leaving some streaky lace on the sides of the glass. Jul 25, 2022Īppearance – The beer pours a deep brown, nearly black, color with a tan colored head of one finger height. It's just a good Alltech barrel aged stout with a bunch of peanut butter powder dumped into it and there isn't much more to say. It's not bad, but it does feel kinda half-hearted and like nothing really fits together. The peanut powder even out-competes the barrel character at times, which is saying something. Here though, it feels like someone went buck wild with the ol' PB2 powder in an attempt to appease the pastry stout crowd. Every barrel aged beer they do revolves around that nice top note, and it's pleasant enough. There's always loads of great bourbon and barrel flavor with little heat or bite. O: Normally I like Alltech's hedonistic and straightforward approach to bourbon barrel aged beer. No heat at all for how apparent the barrel juice is. Plenty of the trademark corny-sweet bourbon. There's a tame baseline of roasted malt: baker's chocolate and mild soot. T: Plenty of peanut powder, front and center, but overall we have more balance here than on the nose. With warming and repeated sniffs, it opens into toffee, caramel, bourbon ball candy, bakers chocolate, mild soot, and a dose of corny-sweet bourbon with no bite. S: Huge whiff of dry peanut powder on the nose. Beige head forms at a half inch and lasts only a minute before completely dissipating. A: As dark as brown gets before becoming black.
